When opening a new account you will be required to verify your Identity to comply with the Money Laundering Act. If you open through a bank branch, the bank clerk will complete the process for you. However, if you open the account through the internet, you might need to verify using other means.
One such method of Identity verification is performed by the Deutschepost service called PostIdent available at their Postoffice.
This process is free for consumers.
Here are the detailed steps of how you can verify your Identity using PostIdent service from DeutschePost.
Apply for a bank account online and print the documents.
If you do not have a printer, you can ask the bank to send the documents to your address.
To find out the centre which is closest to you, click Postoffice Finder.
Type in the city, postal code or the name of the street and under the option “alle speziellem service” select the option for “PostIdent” to list the offices with the facility.
On the map you will be shown all the Postoffice branches closest to you.
Select the office closest to you and with the suitable opening timing.
Take along the following documents with you to the Postoffice:
– Printed Application form (as generated)
– PostIdent Voucher
– Original Passport & Resident permit/Visa (Non-German) or EU ID Card (EU Citizens)
– Address registration Confirmation (Anmendung). Sometimes the clerk does not require this document.
Normally there is only one line for all services in the Postoffice.
So, you can stand in the line as all the counters in the Postoffice can do PostIdent verification.
If there is a token system, select the option for “PostIdent” and wait for your number to be called and the counter number.
Sign the application form in front of the Clerk at the Postoffice.
He will check the details on the application form with the details on the details on your passport and verify your signature.
Then the clerk at the post office will send the application form to the required address free of charge.
